“‘Augmented reality’ is normally opposed to ‘virtual reality’”, says Lev Manovich. They both involve with sight, hearing, touch, and smell. What different is that virtual reality explains an environment that simulates the physical presence in the world or the imagined worlds, in which case, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one. On the contrary, augmented reality system “helps the user to work in a physical space by augmenting that space with additional information”. Right now, the general definition of augmented reality is a live view of physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by sophisticated technologies input sound, video or other kinds of data, which enhance the perception of reality. For instance, many video games pull graphics out of the screen, integrating them into real-world environments. Also, the head-mounted display(HMD), which paired to a headest, is another example.In The Poetics of Augmented Space, Manovich describes augmented reality as “the laying of dynamic and context-specific information over the visual field of a user”, and mentions Janet Cardiff’s “audio walks” as examples of laying information over physical space. Janet Cardiff is an artist who creates videos by “following a trajectory through a space” with her own narration. She holds her cell phone, playing the video she recorded before, placing it on the exact same place with the same angle, and what happened in the video looks like it actually happening at present. As she walking, the video scenes fit perfectly in the whole environments, and with her instructions, such as “go down the stairs”, “look in the window”, “go through the door on the right”, all of these become so alive. Everything in that video is connected perfectly with the real world. Watching the pieces, the users are able to connect the narrative fragments and sound effects with the environment. Though she does not use any sophisticated computer, networking, or projection technologies, her work does bring the physical space into the reality, picturing a perfect combination of additional information outside of real world and the real-world environments. In this case, Janet’s walk could be seen as augmented reality.Therefore, I agree with Hanna that augmented reality should not be limited to the visual sense. It blurs the line between the reality and the simulated senses. Whichever creates the pieces that allow the integration of the digital information and the environment in real time with sound, videos, or GPS data, could be regard as augmented reality. It does not matter if there is any advanced technologies involved. The view of users is what really important.Augmented reality changes the way of seeing this world. Our life has been surrounded by electronic devices and all kinds of technologies that involves augmented reality elements. Checking out the smartphones, tablets, iphone, ipad, you will be surprised of how many augmented reality applications are operating to help make your life easier.
FINAL PROJECT
When you scan it, you will see the "storage" disappeared, and the 404 is replaced by a sign of woman, which leads to the next image.
After scanning the second trigger image, you will see the woman becoming a witch, with the broom, hat and magic stick in her hand. And the green letter on the top implies the spelling of the word, which leads to the next image "switch".
In this project, our group creates a journey of "treasure hunt", in which we provide several hints that will lead to the final destination.
First of all, we decided to design the journey inside the smith hall, near our classroom. So each of us choose two images that we wanted to use as the triggers at fourth and fifth floor in Smith Hall, where the treasure should be, and took pictures of them. Our idea is that each image is going to help lead to the next trigger image until the treasure is found. Because of this, when the viewer scan those images, they will be able to find the clues, such as numbers, colors, or sounds, and through some analysis and thinking, which image is the next one should be clear.
The images I picked are the two signs hung on the wall, which looks simple enough, but sometimes simple means difficult. I found there are many elements I could make use of, like the letters, the sign and the numbers. In the first image, I use photoshop to replace the 404 by the sign of woman, and also erase the "Storage" on the top, in order to connect with the second image. To make the effects look better, I select the whole sign except the wall, and put it on
aurasma, so that it will match the original image perfectly.
For the second image, I added a witch hat, a witch broom, a magic stick and the bats to make the woman sign look like a witch. Besides, I highlighted the letter "W" and added an "S" on the left in the color of green. Combine those elements, the viewer can get the meaning of "switch", which is kind of tricky. It is pretty hard to think of the connection between the image of switch picked by Ju Kim and my second image.
My teammates are going to finish this journey, and I believe it will be interesting. We do have the treasure ready to be discovered.
